Some viewers seem to believe that it’s progressive to appreciate a weird, nerdy female loser, but there is nothing especially new about Fey’s attractive, upwardly mobile, wealthy, white, college-educated Liz Lemon: only a mashup of existing formulas…“Winning” in Tina Fey’s playbook means being immensely attractive but safe from being marginalized thanks to a smart sense of self-deprecation as well as the compulsion to slam other women who don’t feel the need to sublimate their looks or their sexuality. Fey has built a career on feministy bon mots like “Women are called crazy in Hollywood when they’re still talking after nobody wants to fuck them anymore.”

I often say that I hate men. It’s false in the sense that there are men I love and care for dearly. Men as a group, however, antagonize me, and I do hate a lot of what falls under masculinity and manhood. When women say they hate men, it is not a simple statement. Women hate men because they are abused by men, because they are raped by men, because they are marginalized by men, because they are murdered by men, because they must live their lives constantly being judged by men. Moreover, it is male-dominated society that teaches us that all of this can be avoided by becoming submissive to men, by being nice and quiet, by letting them into our spaces, by giving them access to our bodies, by making ourselves attractive, by giving due consideration to their opinions no matter what they are. It is exhausting and overwhelming. I do not blame any woman who reacts with hatred, because such reactions are often the product of years of exhaustion. No woman is rewarded for airing her hatred of men. She only invites more judgment upon herself.

Many women reject the idea of hating men as valid for two reasons; one, because the patriarchy itself tells us only ugly, hopeless dykes do that (and they have taught us that being an ugly dyke is a horrible thing), and two, because we fear it is like hatred of women. Consider, however, why men hate women. They hate women for not being sexually available. They hate women for not being attractive to them, or inaccessible to them if they are. They hate women for not dressing the way they would have them dress. They hate women for being smarter or more successful than them. They hate women who have authority over them. They hate women who challenge them. They hate women who have no intentions of yielding to them. They hate women who have no interest in men. They hate women for not handing over full control of their bodies and minds. They are conditioned to do this from childhood. It is socialized behavior that is regularly rewarded. It is not the product of suffering, and it is not comparable.

Finally, I would add that I do not believe men can be feminists. Men can most assuredly be loving and considerate supporters of women who challenge misogyny and sexism. However, allowing them to assume the title of feminist is dangerous. It places any woman who challenges or disagrees with them in the absurd position of looking anti-woman. It allows them to air their opinions side-by-side with women, and asserts that their opinions on sexism and the needs of women are just as valid. It also undermines a very important factor critical to the success of women; i.e., it deprives them of a space in which they can fumble and grow without the judgment of, or competition from, men. Men who truly understand sexism understand the need not to interfere, and recognize that they will never fully understand what it is to be the target of it. Feminist ends cannot be achieved if men are not willing to surrender space, power and their egos. A man who is truly acting out of love for women accepts this, and does not require a special title or recognition to maintain his commitment.

In short: stop having kneejerk reactions to women who openly and unreservedly air their anger about how they and the women they love have suffered at the hands of men, because what the hell do you think sexism is, when you get right down to it? Consider why your first reaction is one that works to appease and protect the feelings of men, rather than recognizing the validity and origin of some women’s emotions and reactions.

Chandra coming was something that’s helped me to not hate my life for several reasons. The first is that recently there have been a rash of terrible articles about feminism in the school newspaper, (proving that even women who purport to be feminists at my school are dickbags and should never talk, ever) and hopefully her well-attended convocation gave some people ideas about what feminism actually is. The second is that during the reading group Barb made fun of the male faction of the philosophy department in front of their biggest fanboy. Said fanboy could not articulate coherent thoughts for the rest of the session, which of course filled me with glee. Barb is an expert at feminist bullying. The third is that Chandra gave a talk about her life, and she talked about a conference that she organized when she was in graduate school. The best part was when she talked about a disagreement that happened between Spivak and Anzaldua while Anzaldua was presenting because I love feminist gossip.

A fun fact about Barb that needs to be recorded on the internet is that she has a service dog named Jenny, who happens to be a very smart and pretty corgi. One time I showed Barb Critical Feminist Corgi and she looked at Jenny and said “Look, you have comrades across the internet!”

I also loved when Chandra asked said fanboy to “email her his question if he ever thought of it.”

These are 5 connections I learned about when visiting the Border Patrol facilities in Nogales, AZ.

1. Reading is FUNdamental

Why would Border Patrol agents participate in Reading is FUNdamental? I was told by my tour guide that they don’t want kids to be afraid of them. It’s also obviously community service as a publicity stunt.

Should Border Patrol be allowed into school when in uniform? Most Border Patrol agents consider themselves agents even when they are off duty or plain-clothes. It is illegal for schools to inquire into children’s immigration status. The tour guide told me that one child at a school told him “You deported my uncle.” Schools are not safe spaces if Border Patrol is visiting in my opinion, even if they would not inquire into a child’s status.

2. McDonalds…or Burger King…(both tour guides said something different) brings in a truckload of lunches for the young people being detained at the facilities. I don’t know if Border Patrol thinks that we will think that is some kind of special treat for the children but I see it as nutritional torture techniques. These children have most likely gone weeks without a full meal, are not used to eating greasy, fatty fast food burgers in their places of origin, and their stomachs will probably not be able to handle these lunches. Part of degrading someone can be deteriorating their health.

3. Fords makes many of the vehicles used by Border Patrol.

4.Border Patrol uses Google Earth for training and in their surveillance facilities. They have a contract with Google Earth

5. AT&T is called for an interpreter when someone who is being detained cannot speak English or Spanish. If a Border Patrol agent can speak a language other than English or Spanish, such as Chinese, then they are constantly being called to do interpretations. Also, btw, detainees are sorted by Mexican and OTMS=Other than Mexicans, and then are sorted by country.
